is a Canada-wide initiative led by the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA) to make recreation more accessible for low-income children and their families.
Why is CPRA doing this?
Because 1.1 million or 1 in 6 children in Canada live in poverty and research shows that children in low-income families are far less involved in sport, cultural and recreational pursuits than in families with average and above average incomes.
Children living in poverty tend to:
- Perform poorly in school,
- Live with chronic stress,
- Experience family conflict,
- Have higher levels of aggression, and
- Develop psychological disorders.
